I was going to say it’s amazing this manages to annihilate both roko’s basilisk and pascal’s wager in one fell swoop, but on second thought, that’s just because roko’s basilisk is literally just pascal’s wager reskinned for tech guys.

Pro wrestling is one of the bigger bastions of pathopsychology-resistant art because it fulfills the role that theater about gods once did: a mythological stage regarding events that really might be true

When Everything Everywhere All at Once said “The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind, especially when we don’t know what’s going on"

When the Good Place said “Why choose to be good every day when there is no guaranteed reward now or in the afterlife… I argue that we choose to be good because of our bonds with other people and our innate desire to treat them with dignity. Simply put, we are not in this alone.”

When Jean-Paul Sartre said ”‘Hell is other people’ is only one side of the coin. The other side, which no one seems to mention, is also ‘Heaven is each other’. Hell is separateness, uncommunicability, self-centeredness, lust for power, for riches, for fame. Heaven on the other hand is very simple, and very hard: caring about your fellow beings.“

Love that we’ve elevated the conversation to such a degree that, if you’re going to be grimdark nihilistic in fiction, you need to argue philosophically against 4 seasons of The Good Place.

Destined mortal enemies reincarnating across the ages, except the destiny in question has no power to ensure that either of them takes up a suitably heroic occupation in any given life, so sometimes it ends up having to go to considerable lengths to keep their rivalry alive and relevant in circumstances that absolutely are not conducive to it.

In a past life we were warrior princes. In this one we are writing an increasingly long series of academic journal articles with titles including the phrase “: A Response to”

I think people are missing the point. Y'all are still having their lives run in parallel, giving then conflicts that have solid, obvious through-lines. They’re not grand conflicts, but they’re still shared conflicts.

What you want is generations where one is the Greatest Warlord of their Age and the other runs a mid-sized bakery. One is the most dreaded pirate in all of Indonesia and the other works a beet farm on the Great Hungarian Plain.

Generations where if the rivalry is going to flourish, someone - many someones - are going to have to put the work in.

My understanding of the themes and narrative arc of Jojo based off years of observation of Tumblr posts.

I need people to understand that in the six years since I posted this my notes are frequently flooded with haughty, snarky, or just plain rude people telling me exactly what the show is about, it’s not hard to understand, it’s simple idiot.

No two of these explanations agree.

(grabs you by the shoulders) you have to make room for new experiences in your life. you have to go through the unpleasant work of leaving your comfort zone, even if just for a few minutes at a time. because if you don’t, your brain will trick you into stagnation. you will start to believe that the world can barely fit you in it. but that’s not true. it’s the opposite way around. you can fit the whole word inside of you. your task is only this: to welcome it with open arms

ultimately the truth about frankenstein is that we are all grotesque amalgamations of the best and worst parts of everyone who came before us. and sometimes the people who are supposed to love us because of and in spite of this will not. and we can kill them with hammers for that. and i think that’s beautiful
